Barby Keel first started caring for animals when a British army soldier asked her to watch his dog when he was deployed. Now, Barby watches over 160 cats, 16 pigs, 8 dogs, 6 horses, 100 chickens, and 80 rabbits. In all 600 animals at once!“Some days I am shattered—it’s hard work,” she said. “But then I get a little nose ‘boop’ or a face peers up at me, and I remember why I’m doing this.” She started the sanctuary with a partner, but he ended up saying ‘it’s me or the animals’ – so I packed his bags for him.” “The animals were everything to me, and they still are.
She ran the sanctuary alone for nearly 20 years, but now employees up to 14 volunteers to help out each day. The Barby Keel Sanctuary is open to the public and runs on donations.
