The DA Recommends Resentencing The Menendez Brothers Thanks To Netflix Attention
The Los Angeles County District Attorney recommended on Thursday that Erik and Lyle Menendez be resentenced for the 1989 murder of their parents, pointing to the renewed public interest in the case. After a controversial series on Netflix and documentary brought the spotlight back to the case, District Attorney George Gascón believes resentencing is appropriate due to extenuating circumstances. That would make the brothers eligible for parole, and now it’s up to a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge.
Jose and Kitty Menendez were fatally shot in their Beverly Hills home as they watched TV on Aug. 20, 1989. Following two mistrials, the brothers were eventually convicted. They were 18 and 21 at the time, and their defense involved allegations of sexual abuse.
