Sovereignty Wins Kentucky Derby 151
Jockey Junior Alvarado got his first career Kentucky Derby win atop Sovereignty at 9-1 odds. They beat out the favorite, Journalism, who came in second followed by late addition, Baeza in third.
The win was special for Alvarado as his dad was a jockey: “It means the world to me. My family’s here. I thought I had a great chance.”
It was a second Derby win for trainer Bill Mott. Despite the rain, there were 147,406 there to see it in person!
