Julia Michaels Talks Making “Sports Car” With Tate McRae
Julia Michaels has written or helped write so many pop songs you already know and love like “Taste” from Sabrina Carpenter, “Love You To Love Me” from Selena Gomez, and “Sorry” from Justin Bieber. Julia has her own big songs like “Issues” and a remix of “Heartless” with Diplo Morgan Wallen. She’s also behind the new one from Tate McRae, “sports car.” She recently chatted with Zach Sang about working with Tate on the new song and had all good things to say about her.
She is a lyricist. She’s a melodicist. She, like, knows exactly what she wants.
Julia described Tate’s sense of direction as a dream for her a songwriter. She said,
I didn’t know her very well, but I love that we could be complete stranger, come into a room, we talk for a couple hours, and then we leave with a song.
That’s like, you know, that’s “sports car.” That’s crazy. That didn’t exist yesterday, this morning. And now we get to leave with this really fun, exciting song.
