The Easter Eggs In Lady Gaga’s Artist Of The Year Speech
Usually when an artist has a prior engagement on the same night of an awards show, they’ll pipe in a prerecorded acceptance speech. Luckily, Lady Gaga was able to make it to the MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena before her own performance at the Mayhem Ball at Madison Square Garden!
Fans voted her the Artist of the Year at this year’s VMAs and it seems that she may have had a heads up because why else would the showrunners have moved such a prestigious award to beginning of the show? We’re guessing it was so that it would fit with her concert schedule!
She gave a warm speech thanking her audience and her partner, Michael Polansky, for their support.
Her speech gave subtle nodes to her own music with the words “mayhem,” “monster,” and “applause.”
I’m getting ready for the show — I thought how much it would mean to me to win this award tonight and I cannot begin to tell you what this means to me. I thought about what it means to me to be rewarded for being an artist — being rewarded for something that is already so rewarding.
Being an artist is an attempt to connect the souls of people all over the world. Being an artist is a discipline, a craft meant for reaching into someone’s heart where it grows it’s roots in reminding them to dream. Being an artist is a responsibility to make the audience smile, dance, cry, release at any turn. It is a method of building understanding and celebrating community.
I hope as you navigate through the mayhem of daily life, you are reminded of the importance of the art of your life — that you can count on yourself and your simple skills to keep you whole. Your rehearsal, your discipline, your craft deserves to be rewarded for its passion. The way you move through your life is iconic and rare. It is entirely yours.
I dedicate this award to the audience. You very much deserve a stage to shine on and I give you all my applause.

I wish I could stay and watch all these amazing performances, but I have to go back to Madison Square Garden.
“Mayhem” directly related to her latest album by the same name and her current tour, The Mayhem Ball. “Monster” was her song from 2009 on her album The Fame Monster album; “little monsters” are her fans. And finally, “applause” was a nod to her song by the same name from her 2013 ARTPOP album.
To further support her Artist of the Year win, Gaga’s new song, “The Dead Dance” is out now to support season two of Wednesday on Netflix where she makes a cameo towards the end.
