Several Students And Fans Injured After Railing Collapse Following St. X Trinity Soccer Match
A huge celebration turned dangerous quickly when a railing collapsed at Waggener High School following a penalty-kick shoutout victory for St. X men’s soccer over rival Trinity.
When players ran to the stands to celebrate with the student section, the railing collapsed injured several students and fans.
St. Matthews Mayor Rick Tonini said there were six people were taken to the hospital, three by ambulance and three by personal means. St. X soccer coach Andy Schulten said that both players who were injured have been released from the hospital and are at home resting. He has not responded to the question of if those players will be available for Saturday’s regional championship match against Collegiate. That match will now be played at Ballard High School.
A spokesperson for St. X said:
“During Thursday night’s varsity soccer match held at Waggener High School, several Saint Xavier students were injured when a railing collapsed as they celebrated the team’s victory near the student section. Thankfully, none of the injuries were life-threatening, and all affected students are recovering.
We are grateful for the swift response from those on site and ask for the continued prayers and support of our Saint Xavier community. The school is fully cooperating with the Kentucky High School Athletic Association as they investigate the incident.
