UPS Cargo Plane Crashes Just After Takeoff From Louisville
A tragic scene unfolded at 5:15pm Tuesday November 4 just after takeoff at Muhammad Ali International Airport as a UPS cargo plane headed to Honolulu caught on fire and crashed. There crew members were on board and the resulting fire covered a vast area, leaded to shelter in place orders for a 5 miles radius from the scene.
Governor Andy Beshear stated there were three deaths and at least 11 injured upon initial reports, with those number expected to rise.
The FAA released the following statement regarding the crash:
UPS Flight 2976 crashed around 5:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Nov. 4, after departing from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was headed to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. The FAA and NTSB will investigate. The NTSB will lead the investigation and will provide all updates.
