IU Caps Perfect Season With First College Football National Championship
The Indiana Hoosiers capped a perfect season by beating the Miami Hurricanes in the College Football Championship last night in Miami. A kneel down ended the close game, 27 to 21.
Senior quarterback Fernando Mendoza can add that to his Heisman Trophy he won this year. And he was also the hero of the night with a spectacular touchdown that sealed the deal. Per WAVE3, head coach Curt Cignetti said: “Let me tell you: We won the national championship at Indiana University. It can be done.”
Cignetti, who took over a program with a nation-leading 713 losses and turned it into the game’s biggest winner in the span of two years. Mendoza finished with 186 yards passing, but it was that tackle-breaking, sprawled-out 12-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-4 with 9:18 left that defined this game — and the Hoosiers’ season.
