Kelly Clarkson’s Record Label Called Her Biggest Hit The “Worst Song Ever”
This is a crazy backstory behind Kelly Clarkson’s biggest hit worldwide, “Because of You”. During an interview promoting “The Voice”, she shared a story from earlier in her career trying to convince her label she wasn’t just a singing contest winner, that she could write songs, too. She wrote “Because of You” about her parents’ divorce and it was deeply personal, but her label told her at the time it was “the worst song ever” because “it didn’t rhyme”. But she pushed hard for it to make the album and got someone with influence on board with it, and the fans did the rest.
She said that was an early lesson “that a lot of people just don’t care,” she reflects. “They don’t care about the art of it, they just wanna make the money.” The success of that song showed her the fans are the real reason artists get to have the career they do.
