Sabrina Carpenter moved in to the Coachella Main Stage as a headliner like it was one of her tour stops! Big sets, lots of dancers and costume changes!
There was one awkward moment she ended up apologizing for after mistaking a Zaghrouta, a celebratory Arabic chant, for yodeling during her set.
During her performance, an audience member voiced the traditional chant, prompting Carpenter to say “I think I heard someone yodel. Is that what you’re doing? I don’t like it.” When the attendee explained “It’s my culture,” Carpenter responded “That’s your culture, is yodeling?” After learning it was “a call of celebration,” Carpenter replied “Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird.” The interaction sparked backlash on social media, with critics calling her response insensitive and Islamophobic. Carpenter apologized on X Saturday:
my apologies i didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly. my reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. could have handled it better! now i know what a Zaghrouta is!
