A 20-year-old YouTuber turned first-time director had the biggest movie at the box office this weekend!

Kane Parsons not only won the weekend box office, but gave A24 it’s largest opening weekend in the studio’s history, earning over $81 million with his $10 million horror/thriller Backrooms. Parsons adapted his own viral YouTube series, becomes the youngest director ever to claim the top domestic box office position.

Another YouTuber, Curry Barker, gave Focus Features their highest-grossing North American release in it’s third weekend with Obsession, earning $148 million in three wekeends. The Mandalorian & Grogu dropped approximately 70% to third place with $24 million, accumulating $171 million worldwide against a $165 million budget. Michael finished fourth with $11.7 million, just ahead of Nate Bargatze’s debut film The Breadwinner in fifth place with $7.5 million.
