Hall Of Fame Jockey Robby Albarado Passed Away at 52
Churchill Downs, racing fans, friends and family mourn the loss of Hall of Fame jockey Robby Albarado.
From WAVE3, “Saying goodbye to someone who left us too soon is extremely difficult,” Churchill Downs Racetrack President Mike Anderson said in a statement Tuesday. “The Churchill Downs family is saddened by this devastating loss and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and numerous friends.”
Albarado, who rode from 1996 to 2021, ranks fourth all-time at Churchill Downs with 1,192 victories. He also ranks second all-time at the historic track with 87 stakes wins. He was a two-time leading rider at Churchill Downs, capturing titles during the 2008 Spring Meet and the 2016 September Meet.
Albarado’s life was not without controversy. In 2011 and 2012, Albarado was named in two assault cases.
Throughout his illustrious career, Albarado secured 40 Grade I victories. He was best known for his partnership with Horse of the Year Curlin, whom he piloted to historic wins in the 2007 Preakness Stakes, 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic, and 2008 Dubai World Cup. He also won the Preakness Stakes in 2020 aboard the filly Swiss Skydiver.
