Superintendent Came Up With Innovative Way To Keep Music Program Thriving
Superintendent Dr. Laura Jacob has an innovative idea to help students who can’t afford to rent instruments still participate in music. In her school near Pittsburgh, 70% of students are low-income. But despite that, it still has a thriving music program thanks to 3D printers!
She got the idea to make violins with 3D printers from the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. After watching and listening intently to a YouTube video of professionals playing plastic instruments, she thought that might be a solution for her school. It started with just two 3D printers and now Dr. Jacob has 30 printers in her office. In just five years, she’s printed 200 violins for students and they love it!
