Mariah Carey Skips Biggest Song In Vanguard Medley
Would Mariah Carey thaw out her Christmas heart early to accept the Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs in the beginning of September? Even if she considered doing it, it didn’t happen.
Mariah Carey was honored at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards where she performed a medley of her music, past and present, to celebrate the award. At about 1:15, she hits that beautiful signature whistle tone and cycles through mostly throwbacks. She covered “Sugar Sweet,” “Fantasy,” “Honey & Heartbreaker,” “Obsessed,” “It’s Like That,” “Type Dangerous,” and finally “We Belong Together.”
She technically left out her most popular song, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” It’s play time beats out the rest according to Billboard, but perhaps because it’s season-specific she didn’t even utter an “ah ah ah” from the beginning.
The Video Vanguard Award marks Mimi’s first-ever VMA.
She thanked MTV for played her videos and reflected on what making them meant to her:
Music videos are my way of life — bringing music to my own life. Mini movies visualizing the sheer fantasy of it all. And let’s be honest, sometimes they’re just an excuse to bring the drama and do things I wouldn’t do in real life.
