Kentucky Teacher Makes Prosthetic Hand For Student Using 3D Printer
Kentucky’s Teacher of the Year, Scott Johnson, of Barren County, noticed one of his Kindergarten students, Jackson Farmer, didn’t have a hand. So he started a project in his STEAM lab that led to changing this kid’s life!
Using a 3D printer, corn-based bioplastic, some screws, fishing line and rubber bands, he built a working prosthetic hand for Jackson all for just $30. He spent months working quietly in between classes for months, and didn’t tell Jackson or his family what he was up to until he was confident he could pull it off. He also had help from a group of 3D printer volunteers around the world called E-Nable. He wanted to make sure it was light and flexible enough so he could play!
