Community Rallies Around Homeless Man To Get Him Shelter

CBS Mornings and David Begnaud profiled the story of a small town in South Carolina who came together to help an unhoused man and his dog get out of dangerous winter weather conditions.

A man named Carlos spotted Chris Brannon and his dog, Mowgli, out in the cold, noticed the ice on his beard, and asked to take him for a hot meal. Chris took him up on it, and that first connection led to several of the town’s people to step in. Carlos put a Facebook post out with some pictures and location details asking if anyone else could help get him shelter. They did. Lisa and Ruthie found him and took him to get a hotel room. Donations that poured in covered a week’s stay. Holly, an EMT who had to borrow money just to get to work, got the dog a winter coat. Kyla the hairstylist gave him a cut, a retired vet tech named Brianna gave the dog a bath…and then the hotel extended his stay free of charge.

Chris and Mowgli were the beneficiaries of 70 acts of kindness in total. Many who donated didn’t have much themselves, but still gave what they could.
