Principal Fired For Taking In A Homeless Student
After 31-years in education, a former high school teacher in Ohio was asked to step down for what he did for a student.
CBS’s David Begnaud has the story of Rob Burnside, who was principal of Lakota East High School in Ohio when he met Darius “Dede” Hayes. Dede’s home life wasn’t ideal. His mom wasn’t safe to live with and his dad had issues which meant Dede sometimes slept in a car. But after the school got a letter saying his mom had a new address outside of the school district, Dede wasn’t allowed to be enrolled anymore. That’s where Mr. Burnside stepped in and offered him a place to stay, and he allowed him to continue going to the school against the district rules.
Because of that, the district decided he wasn’t fit to be a leader and asked him to step down. And with the blessing of Dede’s mom, Rob and his wife adopted Dede into their family with no regrets. They had previously adopted two other kids and adding Dede gave them now 7 kids. Now, no school in the area will hire him. When asked if he had any regrets, that answer is “No. Because what value can you place on the life of a young person?”
Dede has since graduated from high school and wants to be an aviation mechanic!
