“Side-Eyeing Chloe” Ten Years Later
People Magazine caught up with the Clem family, reflecting on the unexpected fame of their then-two-year-old, Chloe. You’ve undoubtedly seen the meme of “Side-Eyeing Chloe”, which came from a moment the family videoed of surprising Chloe and her older sister, Lily, with news they were going to Disneyland. Lily burst into happy tears, and Chloe didn’t really get it. An iconic moment was born.
The original video has 24 million views now, and Katie Clem said it’s been a “fun ride” witnessing her daughter become a part of internet history. It came with perks, like a free trip to Disneyland and New York City, but it was odd and concerning strangers wanted to take pictures with their toddler all the time. In fact, Chloe was HUGE in Brazil surrounded by hundreds of people and billboards of her! And they did make $74,000 selling the NFT. Katie said they rode the wave of their popularity posting on their YouTube channel until she noticed her daughters weren’t really interested in it anymore. That’s when she decided her daughters needed to have a say in what is shared about their lives.
Now Lily is 19 and doing her own things, and Chloe is 14. She loves being “Side-Eyeing Chloe” (even claims to be “The original side eye Queen ” on Instagram). “I’m in the What Do You Meme game, so I would always bring my card from that game to show people,” Chloe tells PEOPLE. “It’s super cool.”
