Cross Guard Gets Kudos For Carrying Kids Across Flooded Street

A crossing guard in Chicago named Joe Sass went viral this weekend after he was seen carrying kids across an icy street. A water main broke near an elementary school and it mixed with the snow.

He’s a former rugby player who was seen by a news helicopter carrying kids across the street, some he flings over his shoulder, even stopping to pick up a dropped glove. Sass says his mom is super proud he was feature on WGN News in Chicago, something that’s an equivalent of an Olympic medal to her.

Now, Chicagoans are paying the kindness forward, and thanking Sass for his usually unsung work, through a GoFundMe that’s already raised over $6,000. He plans to donate a portion of that to a non-profit building a community center.
